Taiyo Aksu Down But Not Out At Aragon

Motorland Aragon was the venue for round three of the ESBK Supersport championship this past weekend with ARCO Yamaha rider Taiyo Aksu looking to continue his 100% record of podium finishes in the series after going second-second-third-third in the first four races of the year.

Sitting second overall in the standings prior to the weekend, Taiyo started the weekend as he had in the opening two rounds – consistently at the sharp end – running as high as second ahead of qualifying.

With temperatures once again soaring the #89 qualified inside the top six and was optimistic of a good opening race on Saturday.

An encouraging start saw him immediately launch into podium contention. His bid for glory was however short lived after he fell victim to another rider’s mistake. A lap one crash saw him at the back of the field after he remounted with no foot peg. Whilst for many the damage would mean the end of the race, Taiyo dug deep to bring the bike home in a more than credible eleventh, adding valuable points to his already impressive championship tally.

Sunday sadly did see a retirement after a mechanical issue forced him to stop.

Despite the DNF, Taiyo remains upbeat and still very much in contention for the 2025 ESBK Supersport crown. The series resumes in a couple of weeks in Navarra.

Taiyo Aksu:

“It was a rough qualifying, and I wasn’t able to put the lap together, but we salvaged a P6. My idea was to be aggressive off the start, and I did that, but I got t-boned at Turn 1 by an out-of-control rider. I was able to finish eleventh and my focus turned immediately to Sunday. I made a good start in race two and was able to make up a few positions into the first corner. I continued my aggression through the first lap making my way from seventh at the start to third at one point. Unfortunately, we had a technical problem with the engine at the end of lap one which meant I had to stop and DNF. It’s a sad end to what could have been but that’s racing and all I can do now is look forward to Navarra.”
